From the rise of ISIS in Iraq to that of Boko Haram in Nigeria, from the revolution in Ukraine to mass protests in Brazil, corruption is posing unprecedented challenges to global security.

Our featured speaker, Sarah Chayes, author of THIEVES OF STATE: WHY CORRUPTION THREATENS GLOBAL SECURITY, will explore this thread running through these disparate crises.

Drawing on her 10 years of experience in Afghanistan, as well as field research in a half-dozen other countries, Ms. Chayes makes the compelling case that acute corruption pushes its victims to extremes -- feeding violent extremism or sparking revolution, prolonging civil conflict and strengthening the grip of transnational criminal enterprises.

A former reporter for NPR, Ms. Chayes left her career in journalism to run a nonprofit in the former Taliban heartland of Kandahar, Afghanistan.  She went on to serve as a special advisor to two commanders of the international military forces, Generals David McKiernan and Stanley McChrystal, and the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Adm. Mike Mullen.

She is currently a senior associate at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace.  Her efforts to make countering global corruption a major national security priority have been widely praised in the national news media, to include the Wall Street Journal, the New York times, Washington Post, NPR’s Dianne Rehm Show, and Jon Stewart’s Daily Show.
