The war in Ukraine has raised the risk of nuclear war to levels not seen since the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis. This talk will examine the three risks stemming from the war: How Putin might use nuclear weapons in an attempt to win the war; Russian attacks on one or more of Ukraine’s nuclear reactors triggering a major radioactive release; the consequences should Putin’s nuclear threats succeed in defeating Ukraine. The talk will also place these risks in context. How important is Ukraine to US national security? Are we back in a global nuclear arms race and, if so, how dangerous could this become?
To assess these vital, contemporary issues we welcome Dr. Joseph Cirincione.
He is a national security analyst and author with 40 years of experience working these issues in Washington, DC. He is the author or editor of seven books, including Nuclear Nightmares: Securing the World before It Is Too Late and Bomb Scare: The History and Future of Nuclear Weapons.
Cirincione served previously as president of the Ploughshares Fund, vice president for national security at the Center for American Progress and director for nonproliferation at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, among other positions. He worked for over nine years on the professional staff of the Armed Services Committee and the Government Operations Committee in the U.S. House of Representatives. He served on the International Security Advisory Board for
Secretaries of State Hillary Clinton and John Kerry and is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations. He was an advisor to the presidential campaigns of Barack Obama, Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren.
