U.S-China rivalry has emerged as a defining feature of today’s world, with competition rising along with tension, especially over Taiwan. In the last few years, the U.S. has strengthened ties with Taiwan and drawn back from its policy of strategic ambiguity, just as Beijing has amplified its reunification aims. This talk will discuss the role that Taiwan, and U.S. values and interests, play in U.S.-China competition today, and where things may go from here.

Richard Fontaine is the Chief Executive Officer of the Center for a New American Security (CNAS). He served as President of CNAS from 2012–19 and as Senior Fellow from 2009–12. Prior to CNAS, he was foreign policy advisor to Senator John McCain and worked at the State Department, the National Security Council (NSC) and on the staff of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.
