Evaluating President Trump’s Foreign Policy Team:
The Struggle for Power & Policy
President Trump likes his Generals and has entrusted them with Key Positions in his Administration—Mattis as Secretary of Defense, Kelly as Chief of Staff, McMaster as the National Security Advisor, and Dunford as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Together, with Secretary of State Tillerson, they have been labeled the “axis of adults” by establishment Republicans.
As a group their mission has been described as twofold— correcting the Obama Administration’s hesitancy to use force or commit troops that many allies perceived as a retreat from traditional global leadership, and the more delicate task of mitigating damage caused by an inexperienced boss who rattles allies with unexpected tweets and a limited knowledge of foreign policy issues and context. In a “Game of Thrones” the generals’ more “traditional” views of foreign policy competed with the Bannon faction inside and outside the White House, and with other advisors lacking foreign policy experience or expertise. With Bannon gone, the Generals seem to have won this round contingent on Bannon’s proclaimed media war against party leaders. To assess these complex interpersonal and bureaucratic struggles we welcome Mr. David Rothkopf. Mr. Rothkopf served as CEO and editor of the FP Group, where he oversaw all editorial, publishing, events, and other operations of the company, which publishes Foreign Policy magazine. He is currently a columnist for the Washington Post and CEO of the Rothkopf group, producers of, among other things, Deep State Radio, a pod cast he hosts. David is the author of numerous internationally acclaimed books including Superclasse and Running the World. His most recent book, National Insecurity: American Leadership in an Age of Fear, was published in the fall of 2014. His next book: The Great Questions of Tomorrow is due out in 2017. He is a frequent contributor to leading newspapers and magazines, including the New York Times, the Washington Post, the Financial Times, CNN, Newsweek, Time, and many others. He delivered one of the most watched TED Talks. Additionally, David is a visiting scholar at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, and also a Visiting Professor of International and Public Affairs at the Columbia University School of International and Public Affairs. |
